Area of Conservation Bear (ACOSA)

Brief History

Exist indications that at recent Hispanic times the area was inhabited by indigenous groups that, probably arrived attracted by the abundance from the hunting and the fishing. Some archaeologists think that the importance of the site is in the information that could generate about the relation that those cultures maintained with the nature and the way whereupon they took advantage of his resources. Such expectations have sustenance in the evidences found until today and the in question fact of a virtually unexplored zone. The Peninsula lacked access by earth until 1978. This caused that the region remained depopulated in many of its sectors. Nevertheless, in 1975, when settling down the Bent National Park, its territory already was occupied by at least 300 agriculturists, who had to be compensated and to be transferred to another zone. Since then, the park has been destined exclusively to the aims of conservation, scientific research, environmental education and tourism, own of this type of wild areas. The Bent National Park conserves the last portion of Humid Tropical Forest of the Pacific Mesoamericano. By its geographic location, its climatic characteristics and the capricious condition of its grounds and their topography, this site constitutes the home of an amazing diversity of biological species. Equipped with similar wealth, the area has waked up an enormous interest between the Costa Rican scientists and of other countries, and their resources are object of continuous projects of investigation. It is considered that the genetic potential that Bent lodges in all that provision of living beings could offer an invaluable benefit to agriculture, the medicine and other fields of similar iimportancia for the well-being of the humanity.

Natural and Cultural Resources

Bent it is conformed by a singular set of terrestrial and marine ecosystems that interact with a harmony, whose principles science still is far from reaching a global understanding. The area, as a whole, has a flora that adds thousands of species, many of which has a restricted distritución or has disappeared already of other regions. It could mention the example of garlic (Costa Rican Caryocar), ojoche (Brosimun costaricanum) and the caracolito cedar (caracolito Ruptiliocarpon). This last tree represents a scientific finding that data of November of 1993 and constitutes a new sort and species for the world and establishes a new botanical family for the neotropic. The Bent fauna of also excels by the diverse thing. Of its species, a great amount appears in the list of which they are in extinction danger, with the virtue to have significant populations here. Guacamaya or lapa red (Altar macao), the mount pig (Tayassu pecari), the jaguar (Felis onca) and the crocodile (Crocodylus acutus) endorses such affirmation. As well as the caracolito tree, in a future the studies could reveal the existence in the area of other species unknown that, but for the conservation of the park, would be lost for always, without arriving to be described.

For his security and the one of the resources of the area it uses only the footpaths authorized and it does not leave them. Although the accidents in the park are not frequent, we requested to him to have prudence. The fundamental aim of the National Parks is the conservation. Here, it is not allowed to hunt, to damage the plants nor to extract no type of object or material. A calm and quiet attitude is ideal to observe animals and to obtain a greater benefit of the resources of the area. Before his visit, it is necessary to make a reservation to telephone 735-5440, the field personnel will offer more information him.

Access

the Park the South Inter-American Highway is located to about 368 km of San jOse, following and taking the deflection towards Jiménez Port in the community from Chacarita. Also he is feasible to enter by waterway and marine from the locality of Sierpe, that is located to 15 km of Palmar de Osa.
