  On the Caribbean coast in the province of Limón,

Main Plants

 The types of flora mostly found here are the male cedar, the sparrowhawk, the pylon, black javillo", the gilded fruit, manu, the Maria, the camphor, canfin, the cativo, the palm yolillo, the real palm and water choreja or iris. It was created to protect the flora and fauna of this region as well as to facilitate scientific studies and to enhance environmental education. Among the vegetation ferns that can be found are, the white palm, forests on Hills, the yolillales, constituted by the palm yolillo and located in the central sector of the park, marshes formed by herbaceous plants of up to 2m in height and communities of grass on lagoons with floating vegetation like choreja or water iris. The forest has the same structural complexity and diversity of the amazonian forests and represents the great extension of humid forests in the Central American Pacific.

Main Animals

The park is crossed by a natural system of lagoons and navigation channels of great scenic beauty and is the habitat for species like the territorial turtles like the manatí or is vacant marine, of the crocodile of great diversity of crustaceans and 85 freshwater fish species including the gaspar fish. The mammals that inhabit here are the moose, the jaguar, manigordo, saíno, the monkey, the sloth, fishing bat that is one of the biggest in the country. Some of the protected birds are lapa green species in danger of extinction, bass, the turkey buzzard, the sparrowhawk crab seller and violaceous trogon. In addition to the leatherback turtle, the sea turtle and the green turtle, the  black tortoise is very common in the channels from Mohín to TORTUGUERO. This is one of the rainiest zones of the country with heavy showers in short duration and the normal weather of the Caribbean

Main Attractions

This is the most important area in all of the western half of the Caribbean for green turtles to lay their eggs.. Other species of marine turtles that also lay eggs on the beach are the leatherback turtle and the sea turtle. Everything is considered a living laboratory where the structure and the operation of the tropical ecosystems can be studied. The humid forests here are among the last that still maintains an ecosystems of tropical and very humid forest with rains that surpass 5000 annual mm.

Climate

Tortuguero is one of the rainiest zones in the country with between 999 and 1000 mm a year. Local heavy showers of short duration are most frequent with the characteristic Caribbean weather that extends up to 49 days, the last ones are caused by north and north east tradwinds,
