Brief History

The territory that the National Park includes/understands Chin were declared like Biological Reserve the 16 of March of 1982, years later like Protective Zone and recently, in January of 1998 like National Park. The primary target of its declaration as Park went the one to offer protection to an ample zone of Humid Tropical Forest in prístino state where finds a great diversity of species of flora and fauna, many of them in extinction danger. In addition it is a zone that a high hydric production presents/displays, of vital interest for the potable water supply to the neighboring communities and a great historical value when being still in his bordering zones an indigenous group of important population. It includes/understands an area of 11994.74 hectares and comprises of the Area of Conservation the Caribbean Friendship. Form in addition, integral part of the territories declared by UNESCO like Reserve of the Biosphere the Friendship and Site of World-wide Patrimony.

Detailed Location

Forms part of the Reserve of the La Amistad Biosphere and it is located in the Atlantic sector of the Biosphere reserve, and stretches to the provinces of Cartago and Limón.

Natural and Cultural Resources

The Barbilla National Park is covered with virgin forest located within the Life Humid Zones and Very Humid Tropical Forest, with altitude ranges of between the 110 until 1617m where the Tiger hill is located. It displays a great biological diversity due to the physical location and climatic characteristics (3500 to 4500 mm annual precipitation) conditions apt for the establishment of great amount of species of flora and fauna, many of them rare or in danger of extinction such as: puma (concolor Felis), jaguar (Felis onca), manigordo (Felis pardis), moose or tapiri (Tapiris bairdii), great tinamú (major Tinamu), birds of prey (Elanoides forficatus), turkey hens, (Penelope purpurascens), among others. Rare species like tolomuco (Eira barbara), the water dog (Lutra longicaredus), the sun heron (Eurypyga elias) and the nun cariblanco (Monasa morphoeus), also can be observed within the park.

Ethnography

The Park is located next to the Chirripó Indigenous Reserve and is home to the second largest ethnic group of the country: The Cabécar. The Cabécares have their own language and an ample and rich history. Presently their participation in Costa Rican society is marginal and they are very isolated from the rest of the country. Hunting and fishing are their main subsistence along with planting banana, cassava and grains. They also raise domestic animals in small scale. The agricultural front outside the Indigenous Reserve, is headed by nonindigenous farmers who cattle ranch and do basic grain growing. Because of being in an area of rich forest, the earth has been used extensively.

Climate

Its climate characterizes by its precipitations distributed throughout the year. Moderate temperatures, between 18º and 28º degrees Celsius throughout the year. The annual precipitation average oscillates from 3500 to 4500 mm.

Administration Located in Breezes of Pacuarito are counted on potable water, sanitary services, electrification and system of radio communication. In this same town pulpería exists small where foods of the basic basket can be obtained. Footpaths

Suggestions

Before entering the park must be registered in the administration and indicate the number of days that will remain. If it travels single or in group it must be made accompany by a local guide. Bearing all the necessary one for its camping: stores, lanterns, boots, raincoat, coats to sleep, food, first-aid kit, compass. Avoid to leave exposed sweepings, reutilícela, entiérrela or deposítela in the sites available. Prohibe to behave firearms Any extraction of the natural resources of the park is not allowed, as well as the harassment or I mistreat of the animals.

Access

The access route to the Park are the highway towards Lemon. The main entrance is located to 3 km of the city of Siquirres. From this entrance and by a passage of 17 kilometers in lastreada highway and some sectors single for vehicles of double traction, it is arrived until the small village of Breezes of Pacuarito. In this town is the administration of the area, where information can be obtained on the site. From now on the route by the footpaths of the park begins, for which he is recommendable to be made accompany by a guide local because the passage is of more than two hours by difficult slopes, single apt for experienced travellers and signaling alguna,does not exist
