| Arenal Volcano National Park, was created by Executive Decree 20791 (MIRENEM), November 6, 1991; published in the official newspaper La Gaceta, November 6, 1991. It has an extension of 12124 hectares.
Before 1968, this volcano was considered extinct and even it was thought that it was not a volcano. It was known as the Hill Arenal.
The July 29 of 1968 initiated its active period, opening to three craters towards the west flank. The crater A, at 1000 meters, caused the explosion, emanating a piroclastic flow (ardent cloud), that devastated 12 square kilometers, disappearing the little towns of Pueblo Nuevo and Tabacón and causing the death of approximately 87 people.
In the month of September of the same year it began to emit lava taps from the crater A, it kept active until year 1973, when migrates the activity towards crater C, with a height of 1450 meters. This crater kep active until the present; it is characterized by permanent lava taps, of andesite basaltic composition; explosions of piroclastics materials and the constant gas emission. | Detailed Location |
| Arenal Volcano National Park is located in the northwest region of Costa Rica, between the mount foot of the Mountain range of Tilarán and the Plains of San Carlos.
It belongs to Arenal-Tilaran Conservation Area (ACA-T), called "Heart Power of Costa Rica". Protects several hydrographic river basins, that supply the hydroelectric Arenal project, as well as the Arenal-Tempisque irrigation project. Here the rivers Chiquito, Peñas Blancas and Río Fría are born, among others. | Natural and Cultural Resources |
| Arenal Volcano National Park is a living laboratory, due to its great geologic and geomorfologic wealth and its complexity in the development of the biological processes, from a pioneering vegetation to a primary forest.
It displays a very varied flora and fauna, due to the four zones of life: Very Humid Tropical Forest (transition), Montano Pluvial Forest, Lower Montano Pluvial Forest (transition), Very Humid Premontano Forest (transition). | Main Plants |
| Some of the more frequent species found are: Guayabo de Monte, Bait, Ceiba, Cirri, Laurel, Higuerones, Pylon, Guarumo, Raft, different species from palms, heliconias, orquideas, ferns and bromelias including the endemic specie: Pitcaimia Funkiae. | Main Animals |
